It is a well-known fact that men are liable for a gradual decline in their testosterone levels along with the aging process. But the aging factor is not the only `crook`; endocrine conditions, obesity, physical and emotional stress and lack of sleep also can have a negative impact on male testosterone levels.
Adding still, one of the most important factors that affect testosterone levels and the ratio between testosterone and estrogen is the aromatase enzyme. Aromatase is a naturally-occurring enzyme in the body that converts testosterone to estrogen through a process called `aromatization`, a process science is coming to believe to be increasing with age and further depleting beneficial testosterone levels while increasing estrogen levels.
With millions of men all over the world opting for Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) in an attempt to revitalize their bodies and revive their dwindling libidos, the aromatization process associating the testosterone injections may increase estrogen levels at a higher and less comfortable rate in some men, which could result in some of the negative effects of estrogen spikes. The most popular of these are the enlargement of male breast; known as gynecomastia (man boobs), increased fat around the waist, feeling of tiredness, loss of muscle mass, and having emotional disturbances.
With benefits clearly recognized; improved mood and cognition, increased libido and sexual function, surged sense of energy and well-being, increase in lean muscle mass and strength, and reduction of body fat, Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is recommended for men with deficient blood testosterone levels and suffering from symptoms of hormone deficiency.
So what about aromatization and how doctors can overcome the possibility of undesired estrogen rise in some men on Testosterone Replacement Therapy?
As a matter of fact, and with any medical treatment, including testosterone therapy, there are potential side effects. However, these side effects are uncommon during testosterone therapy and, certainly, consulting the proper specialists who are knowledgeable in this field is crucial to experience safe, effective and optimal results. Under proper medical supervision, any potential side effects of high estrogen can be alleviated and avoided altogether by thorough blood work and if needed, an aromatase inhibitor medication can be added to control estrogen levels that may increase in some men receiving testosterone therapy.
